Newberry County has a
population of approximately 35,000, while the City of Newberry, the
county seat, has a population of 13,000. Other municipalities in the
county are Whitmire, known as the 'Pearl of the Piedmont', and
Prosperity which is a small prosperous community ideally situated
near Lake Murray SC. The remaining municipalities are Peak, Pomaria,
Little Mountain, Chappells, and Silverstreet. The latter two are
located near Lake Greenwood. |
Schools
Newberry is served by eight elementary schools, two middle schools,
three high schools, and one career center. Newberry also offers a
private school. Higher education facilities are available at
Newberry College, a four-year, liberal arts college, and Piedmont
Technical College which offers certificate programs, as well as
associate degrees. The manageable public school enrollment of 6,000
reflects the small, rural nature of our community and helps to
create a positive atmosphere in our schools. Students are nurtured
by small classes and afforded advanced placement classes as well as
state-of-the-art computer labs. In Newberry County, we know it's the

Healthcare
From outpatient surgery to physical therapy, from intensive coronary
care to cardiac rehab, Newberry County Memorial Hospital (NCMH)
proudly offers full services to the community. The wellness staff of
Healthy Happenings at NCMH also provides a variety of community
health programs, from aerobics and Tai Chi classes to Lunch and
Learn seminars. As a fully accredited JCAHO facility, our community
hospital and its progressive medical staff are committed to

Springfield Place, a recently completed assisted living facility,
along with several excellent nursing homes, serve the needs of
Newberry's elderly citizens. |
Churches
The number of congregations in Newberry County - there are 240 -
speaks volumes about the importance of religious life in the
community. Our mix of denominations reflects the history of
settlement in the area, often referred to as the Dutch Fork, with
Lutherans (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) being the major
denomination. Other active congregations include Baptists
(Independent and Southern); Methodist (United and Southern); African
Methodist Episcopal; Colored Methodist Episcopal; Pentecostal;
Assembly of God; Presbyterian (American, Associate Reformed and
USA); Roman Catholic; Episcopal; Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints; Jehovah's Witness. Many other non-denominational,
independent churches are also active in the county. |
Recreation
Recreational opportunities in Newberry County are plentiful for the
outdoor lover. The scenic Saluda, Broad, Enoree, and Tyger Rivers
all border Newberry County, while Lake Murray (50,800 acres) and
Lake Greenwood (7,400 acres) add over 150 miles of recreational
shoreline. Choice fishing is available to anglers at the many public
and commercial boat landings. Water sports and boating enthusiasts
can play on our lakes and rivers during much of the year due to our
moderate climate. Newberry County is a haven for game hunters. The
many expanses of privately managed game land and the Sumter National
Forest teem with dove, quail, deer, and turkey. The Spring
Nationals, a coon hunting event, occurs in January. Festivals offer
family fun throughout the year in Newberry County. These include
Spring and Fall festivals held in March and October in Newberry;
Whitmire's Party in the Pines during June; and in August, the Little
Mountain Reunion - billed as the oldest folk festival in South
Carolina. Clubs and organizations are an integral part of the social
life of the area. Also, the Newberry Citv Recreation Department
sponsors many organized activities such as youth football, tennis,
baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, as well as setback
tournaments and ceramics. Churches offer recreational opportunities
in softball, volleyball, and basketball leagues. The Newberry YMCA
provides a full range of recreational activities, including
swimming, for all ages. Two 18-hole golf courses and one 9-hole
course maintain excellent greens for duffers and pros alike.
Swimming and tennis facilities are also available at Newberry and
Mid-Carolina Country Clubs. |
The Arts
The Newberry Opera House offers a wide range of performances
throughout the year. Whether it's country, classical, gospel, or
jazz, you'll find what you're looking for at the Opera House. South
Carolina's only working opera company calls Newberry home and offers
productions each season. Art patrons will also enjoy the schedule of
concerts, dramas, exhibits and lectures offered by Newberry College.
Each year, the Newberry Community Players offer five stage
performances including a musical and a children's show. |
